About the artist: Zolotow's first group exhibition was held in 1948 and shown as part of MoMA's New Acquisitions exhibit. The public got its first comprehensive look at Mr. Zolotow's works in 1957 when they were shown in a one-man exhibition at the Duveen-Graham Art Galleries. Two of his paintings are now in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art. Born in a little town near Kiev in the Soviet Union, the 13th of 18 children, Mr. Zolotow began sketching and painting as a hobby at an early age. He came to the United States in 1906 when he was uprooted by the Russo-Japanese War. He studied pattern and design-making here and eventually opened a die-cutting plant with his wife, Pauline, as partner. After a mild heart attack in 1940, Mr. Zolotow sold the business to devote his time solely to painting. A work by Zolotow was shown posthumously in 1972 as part of its exhibit, Naive Painting: A Selection from the Museum Collection
