About: Created soon after the artist’s return from Japan, Fisherman and the Fish depicts a traditional fisherman being frantically dragged through a stormy sea by a fish he has managed to catch. (Just who is it that has been caught?) Japan appears to have had a certain fascination for Grooms and in 1984, just after having visited the country, he exhibited several "Japanese" works at Marlborough Gallery in Manhattan, enshrined in an enclosed "Japanese Room.” This particular work embodies the wild vitality and even audacity of his very best works and has remained hidden, in a private collection for several decades.
