Dunbar attended the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts, between 1940-1945 with Frederick Allen; bluestone carving with Tomas Penning in Woodstock, NY; bronze casting with Angelica Bodky Lee in Boston, and later in 1969, on sabbatical leave, with Walter Weber in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico; as well as resin casting with Elizabeth Mac-Lean Smith in Boston, MA. She showed frequently at the New England Sculptors Association, the Essex Art Association, CT, and the Woodstock Art Association, among others.
